Today has been a perfect example of why I’ve kept this website up and running for 13 years now.
John Scalzi once said (I’m quoting from memory, so it might not be word for word) — “Social media platforms come and go… but your website? That’ll be around long after.”
Don’t get me wrong. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms are excellent ways to keep up with your readers. However, if you have all your eggs in one basket, what happens to your eggs when said basket is suddenly unavailable? Or worse still, what happens when said platforms decide you have violated one of their rules (ever changing they may be) and ban you from your marketing platform? I know Larry Correia took a hit when Facebook began banning him a few years ago. Fortunately, there are other platforms for him and he’s had Monster Hunter Nation running for almost as long as I’ve had this site.
I’ve told new authors this over the years. Don’t rely on just one source of marketing for your books. Branch out. Keep that website regularly (or semi-regularly) updated.
Today’s message was brought to you by the letter “W”. Because we all know “WRAITHKIN” starts with “W”
Fate is a cruel, fickle mistress.
Torn away from his one true love, Gabriel Espinoza will burn the galaxy to get her back. But doing so first means joining the enigmatic Wraith Corps, where he is thrust to the forefront of a terrible war against an alien threat. The only path to saving her is over the dead bodies of the invaders—if he survives.
Light-years away, his brother, Special Agent Andrew Espinoza, is recruited by a clandestine intelligence agency known only as Project Jericho. He must go deep undercover to find a dangerous threat to the Dominion of Man and eliminate it before it’s too late.
One brother fights to save his love, another to defend his nation, and both to save human civilization.

Hehehe. I’m wondering how many people are losing their shit because their world is no longer available. XD
I enjoy watching them burn it all down. Makes the marshmallows toasty.
Today’s Facebook fail is another reason why I am building my own server and moving my websites on to it. Who knows if WordPress might suddenly go dark?
Oh, agreed. I’m in the same process right now. My biggest issue isn’t building the server but the website from scratch once I get it off WordPress.
No idea of how to set up my own server and all that. I run through a hosting site, but my main pages are based on wordpress.
It’s not terribly difficult setting up a server. It’s the website design from scratch which confuses me.
How do you go about setting up the server?
This is the video I watched to help build one for a friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWJEHfV-pmA
Start at the 17:35 mark.
Yep, that is the big one. I’ve already got the components for the server put together. Getting the software downloaded and installed and getting the website built are daunting tasks on my to-do list right now. And I have three websites I’ll be building from scratch at that.
