Snuck One Past You

I can hear the horrified gasps already.

If you come to the website regularly (which is, like, a dozen or so of you) you might have noticed there’s a new page on the “About Me” tab. In fact, if you click it, you’ll see that there is a completely free short story sitting there for your reading pleasure.

“But why?” I hear you ask. Well, it’s simple. I own the rights to it, and I decided to let anyone and everyone read it for free.

Every few months I plan on putting up free short fiction for everyone to see. Almost all of it has been previously published elsewhere but since the rights have reverted, you win. There is a sneakier marketing ploy at play here, I’ll admit. I want to generate more traffic to the website. In theory, more traffic means more book sales.

Anyway, the story currently available for free is one of my earlier professional sales featured in the anthology “Terror by Gaslight,” edited by the late, great John Manning. My story, “Nightwalker,” marked the debut of one of my favorite characters of all time — Dr. Tobias Fox.

This story was heavily influenced by Mike Resnick’s “weird westerns” he published before his death. I’d never even known the genre existed until I read Resnick’s take on it. From there, it was down the rabbit hole as I devoured everything the man had ever written.

Funny how things turn out sometimes.

Anyway, if you’d like to read the story, you can follow the link here.

In the meantime, I have like 3 books due by the end of the year and that clock is ticking awfully loud…

Don’t forget to preorder your copy of CHICKS IN TANK TOPS from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Publisher’s Weekly loved it, so you know it’s going to be good.
